Course Descriptions

 

Wind Ensemble - This is the most advanced Wind Band at Calabasas High School.  All students in this group are selected through a process of teacher recommendation (high school and middle school teachers are all involved).  This class is designed mainly for 11th and 12th graders, but highly advanced 9th and 10th graders are accepted as well.  Wind Ensemble is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU or UC GPA.

Marching/Concert Band – The Concert Band is our Beginning level instrumental music class, open to all students.  The first semester is Marching Band and the second is Concert Band.  When taken for two full years, this class fulfills your PE requirement for graduation.

Jazz A - This class consists of both the Jazz ‘A’ Band and the Jazz ‘B’ Band.  Both of these groups are audition only.  Auditions take place at the beginning of the school year.  This class is designed for students who already have a solid background in jazz.  9th graders are generally not accepted into this class.  Jazz A is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU and UC GPA.

Jazz Lab - This class consists of the Jazz ‘Black’ Band and is audition only.  Auditions take place at the beginning of the school year.  This class is designed for students who already have a solid background in jazz, including 9th graders of exceptional ability.  Groundwork for musical growth is laid with units on Jazz Theory, Solo Transcription and study, Jazz History, Jazz Ear Training.  Jazz Lab is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU and UC GPA.

Jazz Workshop - This class consists of the Jazz ‘Gold’ Band and the Jazz ‘Workshop’ Band and is open to any student.  It is strongly recommended to schedule an audition prior to registering for the class.  This class is designed for both students of any age with limited experience, and students coming from a middle school jazz program.  Groundwork for musical growth is laid with units on Solo Transcription and study, Jazz History, and Jazz Style.  Jazz Workshop is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU and UC GPA.

Choir 1/2 (Harmony) –This is the choir class where the focus is on building the basic skills associated with singing.  This class is open to anyone (male or female) who wants to take it (provided you can carry a tune and match pitch with a piano).  All first year students in the choir program, regardless of grade, generally take this class.  Choir 2 is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU and UC GPA.  If you have sung in choir in middle school or high school for at least one year, you may receive Choir 2 credit for this class.

Choir 1/2 (Maestoso) – This is an advanced level mixed voice choir class and admission is by teacher selection only.  It is designed mainly for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Choir 2 is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU and UC GPA.  If you have sung in choir in middle school or high school for at least one year, you may receive Choir 2 credit for this class.

Choir 2, advanced (Vivace) - This is our advanced level women’s choir and admission is by teacher selection only.  It is designed mainly for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Choir 2 is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU and UC GPA.  If you have sung in choir in middle school or high school for at least one year, you may receive Choir 2 credit for this class.

Orchestra – This class is open to any student with prior experience playing a string instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass).  The focus is development of individual musicianship as well as ensemble skills.  Students audition for seating assignments in class at the beginning of the school year.  Orchestra is a college prep course and counts towards your CSU or UC GPA.

Unstrumental - This is an extra-curricular mixed voice pop/rock acapella vocal group.  Rehearsals take place and lunch and in the evenings.  Students are selected through an audition process at the beginning of the school year.  All students who wish to audition for Unstrumental must be enrolled in a music program class.

Bare Rhythm - This is an extra-curricular female pop/rock acapella vocal group.  Rehearsals take place and lunch and in the evenings.  Students are selected through an audition process in the middle of the school year.  All students who wish to audition for Bare Rhythm must be enrolled in a music program class.
